-Rules-

Fabric introduced a mixin system based on the Sponge server mixin system, though the mixin system has diverged from the spongepowered one over time. This allowed Fabric to be lightweight by default, whereas Forge hooked itself into nearly every facet of the game itself to give developers access to hooking into internal events, and exposed such functionality primarily an event system, this made Forge quite heavy by default, the event system does include built in overhead of the creation of event objects, additional indirection, and handling of potential actions taken by handlers on the event object, like cancelling. Due to this nature Forge on it's own actually impacted several vanilla mechanics, not to a degree most users would notice, but for more technically oriented players there were noticeable deviations in behavior from vanilla even without any mods installed. In comparison Fabric didn't include almost any of these hooks, instead it gave access to a mixin system that allowed developers to manually hook their code directly into the game's code. This meant when no mods were loaded the underlying code of the game was effectively untouched. This ability to hook into any part of the game's code was fairly crucial for optimization mods, because the system allowed them to easily replace entire swathes of the game's code with their own implementations, or make the types of drastic underlying changes that were unfeasible or extremely tedious with Forge. This is one of the main reasons why so many optimization mods exist for Fabric. Forge has since added mixin capabilities to their modloader in response, so the same is possible in Forge, though this can interfere with Forge's own hooks so there are caveats, regardless this introduction of mixins in Forge/NeoForge allowed many of these optimization mods to be ported to Forge as well, though Forge being rather more heavy than Fabric eats some into the performance of these mods, or in other words Forge likely benefits more from these optimization mods as they can negate the inherent cost of Forge, but Fabric will always give the better performance given mods that make the same changes, just because of it's low overhead compared to Forge.
